When I go grocery shopping, I usually think about going to the commissary… and then I just go down the street to my local grocery store. A lot of times I have a medium-sized list. I think, “If I had a large list, I’d go to the Commissary.” But the thing is, a lot of times once I’m at the store, the medium-sized list turns into the large list and I’ve just spend a lot of extra money.
Why Or Why Not?
Now, the reason I don’t go is two-fold: Time and gas money. And the kiddo. Ok that’s three-fold. Because really, I live 20+ minutes away from any commissary, even though there are at least three in this area. So I have to factor in 25+ minutes each way (gotta factor in traffic) with a potentially whiney kid, and add that to the time it takes to grocery shop with a 1 year old. Plus the cost of gas for driving all that way. And with a grand sigh I usually just opt for the local store.
But then I feel somewhat guilty, because it would save us so much money (supposedly) and aren’t these commissary and exchange benefits the reason my hubby is even in the service? Ok maybe not THE reason, but gosh it’s a great benefit. So enter guilt.
It’s yet another reason that we’re hoping to move on base soon. Then the Commissary will be my go-to store and the NEX will be my go-to Target (What could replace Target????). I’m sure we’ll save money that way, which will be great. But what about us now, and all the rest of the military families who live off base?
Making The Most Of It
I think for me to maximize Commissary visits, I need to be very well organized with my meal planning. That is kind of hit or miss these days. However, I’ve been using Pinterest to get some fantastic recipes (and some that have turned out rather blah too sadly– I wish we could taste recipes on Pinterest before making them!). Nonetheless, at least when I have a good plan for shopping, it makes the trip more worth it.
And, if things are even cheaper than list price, it can make the trip even more worth it right? I partnered with MyMilitarySavings.com to bring you the latest coupons and sales, so be sure to check them out!
In the mean time, I’ve gotta go make a grocery list… 😉
